Rare times are when the best ideas arise. Four friends used the unrest of lockdowns to make music together. It started with covers via webcams from the couch and has quickly grown into a solid Americana band with its own material. Turmoil is influenced by artists such as Tom Petty & Hearrtbreakers, The Band, Neil Young and Jason Isbell & 400 Unit.
When the band got back into the rehearsal room, New songwriter Bart de Waal provided a demo of what turned out to be their first single. That demo resonated with the rest of the band, and in no time their first EP was made in a self-equipped studio. Drummer Thijs van der Poel was also appointed as sound engineer for the occasion and after a weekend of hard work, EP Turmoil Vol. 1 was a fact. A refreshing mix of rock and folk, recorded live, just like the records the band loves. In addition to the line-up of guitar, bass and drums, lap steel and mandolin were also used for a bluegrass twist.
Fast forward to a year later: EP 2, again self-recorded, played and produced, is ready to be mixed. In the meantime, Turmoil wins the band battle: Parel of the Betuwe, opens Appelpop and plays Culemborg Blues. The covers are increasingly making way for the repertoire of their own songs.
In four years, the band grew from remote covers to an Americana rock formation with a fantastic live Mambo Studio.
Turmoil is a band you will definitely hear more of, with this new album they will also travel to the country in 2025 to introduce the public to their fresh take on ‘old school’ guitar-driven music.
